Patterning Therapy

The Pons and Midbrain areas of the brain are responsible for crawling and creeping - forming the foundation for all higher developmental stages of movement. During these stages, balance, depth perception, eye-hand coordination, and other vital abilities are established.

Damage occurring in the pons or midbrain can have a devastating effect on these skills, additionally resulting in poor walking, talking, & cognition.

In Therapy, patterning is designed to (re) introduce neurological stimulation to the areas accountable for these functions, creating new pathways. It is putting precise information into the brain. It consists of passively moving the arms, legs, and head in exact replication of crawling. These patterns must be performed smoothly, rhythmically, & frequently.

There are two main types of patterning: Homolateral and Cross.
